Nestled in the lush forests of the Western North Region of Ghana, Adupri is home to many hardworking residents like Madam Veronica Addai, who depend on palm oil production for their livelihood. Born and raised in Adupri, Veronica supports her two children through this demanding work.
“Palm oil production requires a lot of water to process the palm nuts before extracting the oil. However, water has been a major challenge in this community. As palm oil producers, we often had to walk long distances to fetch water from the stream or a nearby borehole. This situation became worse during the dry season when boreholes would frequently dry up,” explains Veronica.
However, the Adupri Water System installation, funded by Cargill, has brought new hope to Veronica and her fellow community members.
“We are overjoyed for this project since it is also closer to our production site. The new water system is expected to transform our daily routines and enhance our productivity,” she said, expressing their relief and joy.
For Veronica, the water system’s proximity means no longer long, exhausting treks to fetch water. This change will allow her to focus more on her palm oil production, potentially increasing her output and, consequently, her income.
“With the new water system, I believe that my income will be positively impacted as I will be able to produce more palm oil and take better care of my children,” Veronica shared optimistically.
Beyond benefiting her own household, Veronica also plays a crucial role in ensuring the success and sustainability of the water project. As a member of the Water Management Committee established by WSUP Ghana, she is dedicated to overseeing, managing, and operating the water system.
“I believe I am in a good position to ensure that the water system is managed well and benefits the whole community,” Veronica stated.
The Adupri Water System is more than just a water source; it represents a significant improvement in the quality of life for the residents of Adupri. It underscores the impact of collaborative efforts between local communities, NGOs, and private companies like Cargill in addressing essential needs and fostering sustainable development. This water project is a lifeline for Veronica Addai and her community, promising a brighter, more prosperous future.
