In the peri-urban community of Offinso Abofour, located within the Offinso Municipality, students have long faced challenges due to a lack of basic infrastructure. Despite being the second-largest town in the municipality, Offinso Abofour lacked essential amenities such as piped water and adequate sanitation facilities.
In addition, students from the local public primary school had to return home or use nearby bushes when nature called. For the girls at Abofour Basic School, this situation has an even more profound impact, often leading to missed school days during their menstrual periods.
However, the construction of a 20-cubicle WASH facility, funded by an anonymous donor through WSUP Ghana, has revolutionized the school environment, particularly for female students. This facility includes designated changing rooms for girls, addressing a critical need that has previously hindered their consistent attendance.
Jennifer Owusu, a 16-year-old junior high school student, shares how this new facility has transformed her school experience.
“I used to miss the first three days of my period because I bleed heavily, and there was no place at school to change my sanitary towel. But with this new facility, I can now conveniently change my sanitary towels while at school. I am happy I do not have to miss class anymore,” Jennifer explains.
The impact of the WASH facility extends beyond just Jennifer. It brings newfound confidence and assurance to all the girls at Abofour Basic School, enabling them to focus on their education without the stress and embarrassment associated with inadequate menstrual hygiene facilities. This initiative promotes health and hygiene and supports gender equality in education by ensuring that menstrual cycles no longer disrupt learning.
The transformation WSUP’s project brings is a testament to the power of proper sanitation facilities in creating inclusive and supportive educational environments. For the girls of Offinso Abofour, it represents a significant step towards achieving their full academic potential, unimpeded by the natural challenges of growing up.
