For Dona Cristina Fernando Mabasso, the construction of a simple bathroom in her home in Airport B, Block 8, house 35, in Beira, has been a life-changing event. A mother of four with three grandchildren under her care, Cristina’s family had long endured the indignity and health risks of a dilapidated pit latrine.
“It was a risky situation. The latrine was a constant danger, especially for the children. With every rainy season, the structure would deteriorate, leaving us exposed and vulnerable,” recalls Cristina.
The arrival of the WSUP project, implemented through the Youth Development Association of Mozambique (AJUDEM), offered a glimmer of hope. Cristina’s family eagerly embraced the opportunity to replace their unsafe latrine with a proper bathroom.
“We were envious of our neighbours who already had decent bathrooms. When the chance came to have our own, we didn’t hesitate. Before, we lived in constant fear and discomfort. The children were often exposed to germs and the risk of accidents. Now, we have a safe and private space, which has brought a sense of peace and dignity to our lives,” she explains.
The new bathroom has transformed the physical environment and the emotional well-being of Cristina and her family. Beyond the physical improvements, the new bathroom has positively impacted hygiene practices within the household.
“We now have a proper place to wash our hands and are more vigilant about hygiene. This has undoubtedly contributed to the overall health and well-being of our family. I am incredibly grateful for this new bathroom. It has made a world of difference to our lives,” says Cristina.
