WSUP Kenya and the Naivasha Water and Sanitation Company (NAIVAWASCO) signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to solidify their successful 18-year partnership.
This five-year agreement, running from 2024 to 2029, builds upon their past achievements and outlines ambitious goals for expanding water and sanitation access in Naivasha, Kenya.
Over the past 18 years, the partnership between WSUP and NAIVAWASCO has led to significant improvements in water and sanitation infrastructure across Naivasha. Some of the key achievements include:
- Increased water coverage through last-mile network extensions in low-income areas, bringing reliable water access to residents.
- Expanded sanitation coverage by implementing simplified sewer systems in low-income neighbourhoods.
- Welcomed over 2,500 new water connections and over 200 sewer connections, significantly increasing NAIVAWASCO’s customer base.
- Provided capacity assessments, business re-engineering, and support for delegated management operators licensed by NAIVAWASCO.
- Supported NAIVAWASCO in establishing and institutionalising sanitation services through utility assessments and policy development.
The renewed MoU outlines ambitious goals for the coming years, focusing on:
- Increasing water and sanitation access: The partnership aims to achieve 80% water coverage and 30% sanitation coverage within NAIVAWASCO’s jurisdiction, aligning with the utility’s strategic plan.
- Reviewing and adopting a sanitation roadmap and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs): A dedicated sanitation roadmap will be developed for Naivasha, fostering stronger public-private partnerships for improved sanitation service delivery.
- Advancing technology: The partnership will prioritise identifying and adopting suitable sanitation technologies, ensuring efficient and sustainable solutions.
- Ensuring sustainable financing: The partnership will explore innovative financing models, including public-private investments, to ensure long-term financial sustainability for water and sanitation services.
