Development of a Sanitation Business Plan for Blantyre City

Project Duration December 2022 – December 2023 Country Malawi Funder UNICEF
Themes: Advisory

WSUP Advisory partnered with WASTE Advisers Malawi, used a citywide inclusive sanitation (CWIS) approach to develop a self-financing, scalable, and sustainable business model for faecal sludge management (FSM) and the sanitation value chain for Blantyre City. The status of the OSS and FSM markets in Blantyre were determined through a Sanitation Market Assessment including a demographic, sanitation and customer assessment as well as a review of the policy, institutional and regulatory framework. The team focused on supporting the development of a long-term road map to achieve universal access to sanitation based on realistic expectations of the pace of change and the level of investment required. The Sanitation Business Plan, developed in a participative way involving the plan owner,  Blantyre City Council and other key stakeholders, includes the overall strategy for the development of sanitation services for the next 10 years, a detailed operational plan containing the phasing of activities and, the organisational design for its implementation.
