Development, review and update of the National Integrated Urban Sanitation and Hygiene Strategy and Strategic Action plan, Ethiopia

Project Duration 2014-2016 and 2023 Country Ethiopia Funder Asian Development Bank
Themes: Advisory

In 2014, UNICEF provided support to the Government of Ethiopia for the development of a National Integrated Urban Sanitation and Hygiene Strategy (IUSHS) and Strategic Action Plan (SAP). These documents aimed to provide structures and comprehensive policy documents to guide the sector towards achievement national development targets. WSUP Advisory conducted field visits and extensive stakeholder consultation in drafting the IUSHS and SAP. The IUSHS and SAP identified bottlenecks contributing to low level of sanitation services in urban contexts, defined the enabling environment, defined required capacity for the implementation of the SAP, and defined infrastructure and service delivery standards. In 2023, UNICEF with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation contracted WSUP Advisory to review the IUSHS, integrating the citywide inclusive sanitation approach into the plan, updating the SAP and guidelines for Ethiopia and developing a capacity building plan and outline advocacy plan.
